Tranquil Dog Friendly ‘Camp 41’

When you drive off The Spirit of Tasmania after either an overnight or day crossing it’s nice to have somewhere dog friendly to park up and get your bearings for your exploration of Tassie ahead, give your dog a chance to settle from the sea crossing and for everyone to feel the slower pace of life and tranquility that is Tasmania. It’s a bonus if your first little dog friendly adventure is right on your campstep without you having to drive anywhere too!

Pet Friendly ‘Camp 41’

Situated halfway between Launceston and Devonport (Devonport is where the Spirit comes in), Camp 41 provides that charming peaceful escape in the quiet of the Tasmanian bush for you and your dog to take that moment to breathe in deeply and relax, dropping the worry of the sea crossing from Geelong to Devonport.

The campsite itself is charmingly secluded set back in the bush, with 10 private grassy sites. There are young trees between each site which over time will grow to provide more privacy and seclusion. Each site looks out over the little lake, I’m sure there are some dogs that are going to just love the access to this watery playground!

There is a rustic picnic shelter sitting above the lake perfect for a romantic dinner under fairy lights, or sipping that glass of Tassie wine while you quietly watch the wildlife or your pet swimming in the lake. The lake will eventually be landscaped with natives along the far side blending seemlessly into the Tasmanian bush behind it. This is going to be a magic spot when completed.

The campground is a work in progress but already when you drive in through the secure gated access, you can feel the quiet of the tall trees envelope and cocoon you.

At each of the 10 grassy campsites

  • There is 6amp power available.
  • Bore water connection, boil before drinking.
  • For those who work remotely, or you just want to share your experience of Camp 41, there is connection to the superfast Starlink Wi-Fi.

The camp site is open to self-contained vehicles, that is, vehicles that have their own toilet and grey water catchment so vehicles like caravans, campervans and RV’s. Sorry, no tent camping. Once you’ve settled into your campsite take a quiet walk around the wetlands and wander up to the Salmon Farm and Georgie’s Cafe with your dog.

Dog Friendly 41 Degress South Salmon Farm and Walk

Apart from the tranquility of the campsite, what makes this place so special is the access to the dog friendly Salmon Farm, pet friendly Georgie’s Cafe and pup friendly walking trails through the lush wetlands. This makes it heaven for your furry friend, so many smells to be sniffing at, and maybe a sneaky dip in the water. A heads up, you don’t need to be staying at Camp 41 to enjoy the Salmon Farm and its trails.

Unlike other salmon farms around the State, the Atlantic Salmon grown here are obviously grown inland with the use of the fresh clean waters of Western Creek flowing along the property boundary. The water is then filtered back through the magical wetlands acting as natural biofilters for the fish waste, the lush plants also act as filters before the water continues on through the wetlands and eventually back into Western Creek as clean and pure as when it first entered the farm. The farm is an example of sustainability and environmentally friendly fish farming.

You wouldn’t know as you walk around the wetlands with the lush greenery that the ponds were busy filtering and cleaning. You can feed the fish, ducks and keep an eye out for the platypus as you explore the trail with your dog. There wouldn’t be a platypus if the water wasn’t clean!

Before taking the trails around the wetlands try the little walk towards Montana Falls. This walk gives you a different perspective of the falls other than the official trail through the Regional/State Reserve which is not dog friendly. There is a spot for your dog to take a refreshing dip too, as I insisted mine did after rolling in some extremely smelly native animal poo on the way to the falls! That smell was not coming home in the car with me!

What to Expect

  • If you’re not staying at Camp 41, the walk around the wetlands, up to Montana Falls and feeding the fish is $10 per person or $25 per family.
  • Open Tue – Sunday
  • 10am – 4pm
  • If you’re interested in knowing more about inland farming of Salmon you can book a group Guided Tour.

Georgie’s Cafe

Connected to the camp and farm is the licensed Georgie’s Cafe. You don’t have to be staying at Camp 41 to enjoy the cafe. Quaint and rustic with delicious light meals served using the salmon from the farm and local in season produce, I can recommend the Warm Salmon Salad.  Make sure you take some hot smoked salmon when you leave, again, I can personally atest to the deliciousness of this!

My Warm Salmon Salad lunch and yes George enjoyed some Salmon too.

The cafe is very dog friendly with an undercover outdoor area, grassy seating area beneath shady trees in summer and for functions a rustic shed.

George found ‘Georgie’s’ memorial and paid his respects.

You may find Maple, the friendly farm Australian Shepherd dog may visit the cafe or even accompany you on your walk around the trails. Maple is following in the footsteps of the previous dog Georgie by keeping up the tradition of welcoming visitors to the cafe and farm. Keep an eye out for Georgie’s resting place. Dogs are welcome inside the cafe and shop, your furry buddy may get a welcome treat and hello from Richard and Charlotte who run the cafe.
